A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story cast and their real-life counterparts

Larenz Tate lent his acting chops to this movie’s talented cast (including Nia Long and Isaiah Washington), deftly moving through the urban streets of the Chicago poetry scene and the tribulations of love. With characters all at once general and race-specific, Love Jones made an impact on the future of black cinema. The group’s releases showcase not only Wilson’s stellar vocals and inimitable skill on acoustic guitar and piano, but also the leader’s innate aptitude for storytelling through poetic lyrics and beautiful imagery. Desi Jones’ musical odyssey started well before his teen years, having initially played recorder and congas; he then moved to the drum set, while also playing trombone as a member of the Salvation Army band. He joined the Sonny Bradshaw Seven in 1976, gaining experience through regular gigs at multiple venues.

  • Witcher knew he had to make films after seeing Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at age 11.
  • Desmond always denied this accusation and has since passed away himself.
  • “If I spent more than $40 on a movie, that was major budget.

In 1980, he became a founding member of the reggae group Chalice and recorded at least seven albums of original material with the group. His book The Art Of Reggae Drumming, listed as the world’s first instructional book on reggae drumming, was released in 1983. When asked if the film’s young urban target audience might find the characters too upscale or intellectually pretentious, Witcher scoffs, “This film is my reality. I don’t live in a castle on top of a hill, so if it’s realistic to me, it has to seem realistic to some other people out there.

In an awkward moment at the bar, Darius, clearly smitten by Nina, nervously spills his drink on her. As a smooth talker, he quickly recovers and, moments later, is called to the stage to perform one of his poems. He affectionately retitles it “A Blues for Nina.” This sets the stage for a passionate, yet possibly toxic, love connection between them. Darius runs into Nina for the second time at the record store and asks her out for drinks. Nina tells him it’s bad timing, but Darius doesn’t want to take no for an answer.

Kain went on to play a major role in the “Girlfriends” series, and recently starred in “Be Someone.”

Ultimately, she killed him after years of abuse, with the trial failing to consider the way that he had treated her as a relevant factor in the case. Long plays the legend’s mother, Katherine Jackson, while Tate takes on the role of Motown Founder Berry Gordy. BLACK ENTERPRISE spoke to Long and Tate to discuss the possibility of an upcoming movie. Like fans of the movie, they are just as excited as we are about the possibility of it happening. The couple reunited for a Walmart promotion over the holidays, reprising their roles as the couple, but in their later years, sharing thoughts as to what the couple would be doing now. Cast & Crew

The factual drama series depicts the life of the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Nia Long, who made her debut in “Boyz N the Hood” and is a native of South-Central Los Angeles, sees “lovejones” as being an important film without being an attack on grittier fare from John Singleton or the Hughes Brothers. “This is a guy with a really distinct vision that’s going to be on the scene for years to come, and make equally distinctive films,” Wechsler says. The daughter of actors Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter, Bessie has bagged roles in period dramas Howards End and Bridgerton as well as contemporary comedy-drama I Hate Suzie. Havers is best known for playing Lewis Archer for a decade-long period on the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. His film credits include acclaimed titles Chariots of Fire, Empire of the Sun and A Passage to India.

After resisting weeks of begging that they finance his newfound obsession, Witcher’s parents relented and purchased equipment for young Theodore when they realized this wasn’t just a passing interest. They helped him get a Super-8 camera and editing equipment from the Sears catalog, and set him to work.

Following the enormous impact of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, actor Toby Jones co-stars in this dramatisation of another miscarriage of justice, playing Ellis’s solicitor John Bickford. Seeing the two of them on the screen together makes the audience want to see Nina and Darius soon. Hopefully, after the recent Walmart commercial, the upcoming ABFF in June, and then the Michael Jackson movie, tentatively scheduled to debut in October, may be enough to get the sequel to “Love Jones” going. The two say they have remained friends all these years and would be excited about rehashing the roles that the public still questions them about, especially when they are out together. Just as Darius dares to begin believing that Nina could be “the one,” Nina’s ex-beau Marvin invites her to join him in New York to try to work things out. After a night with Darius, Nina tells him that she is going to New York because of unfinished business.

It’s a novel concept that some in Hollywood might consider a risky box-office proposition, but one that director Witcher believes serves a much more important function than profit margin. Darius Lovehall is a young black poet in Chicago who starts dating Nina Moseley, a beautiful and talented photographer. While trying to figure out if they’ve got a “love thing” or are just “kicking it,” they hang out with their friends, talking about love and sex. Then Nina tests the strength of Darius’ feelings and sets a chain of romantic complications into motion. Love Jones is a romantic drama set in Chicago, focusing on the budding relationship between Darius Lovehall, a poet, and Nina Moseley, a photographer. As they explore their connection, the film delves into themes of love and friendship amidst a backdrop of artistic expression and personal challenges.

Tate speculates that it will place both actors in a better position when it comes to negotiations about doing a “Love Jones” sequel. Tate played poet Darius Lovehall, who chases down Long’s beautiful and enigmatic photographer Nina Mosley to start an ill-timed loved affair. “I filmed action scenes with friends, takeoffs from other movies, you name it,” Witcher says. “If I spent more than $40 on a movie, that was major budget. I had a lot of ambitious ideas, but could never save up enough money to do that massive Super-8 opus.

He also recently appeared in Guy Ritchie’s hit Netflix series The Gentlemen. Desmond was a former RAF pilot, who fought during the Second World War. He went on to have a sexual relationship with Ruth Ellis, becoming a love rival to David Blakely. Although he never faced charges for David’s death, historical accounts have questioned whether he encouraged Ruth to murder him by providing the revolver she used.

Witcher, who’s also a tenor saxophonist and jazz aficionado, perks up as much about the “love jones” soundtrack as he does when talking about the film. In his mind the music, which includes songs by members of the Fugees, Dionne Ferris, Cassandra Wilson, John Coltrane and Billy Eckstine, demonstrates a stylistic change that’s just as profound as many of the characters featured in his film. Soon after, he was introduced to both Wechsler and then-New Line executive Helena Echegoyen by his then-manager Spencer Baumgarten. He pitched her a few action ideas that she liked, but when he told her about a romantic comedy based on his own life and the experiences of a few close friends, the seed for “love jones” was planted. The R-rated “love jones” features romance instead of bump-and-grind sex, sensitivity instead of hardness, hope instead of nihilism. None of the characters goes to jail, throws up a gang sign or, unlike “Booty Call,” stretches a 20-minute condom joke into a full-length feature, but all are identifiably black, intellectual without being condescending, and extremely hip.
